The arithmetic behind the figure at the top of this page. Nineteen rows, from ten makers. Four measurements are tracked for each row — height, neck circumference, body girth, head circumference — so 19 × 4 = 76 cells. Eighteen of them have a published value and every single one of the 18 is a height. That is 18 of 76, or 24 per cent. None of the 18 was measured by us — we have not put a tape on a goose yet. You can count them in the table above.

The table is in two parts. The geese are what a maker says one of its own statues measures. The outfits are what a seller says an outfit will fit. Within each part the order is by maker name, and that is the whole of the sort rule.

Every number in a row comes from that row’s source, on that row’s date. Where a source publishes nothing for a measurement, the cell reads ? Unknown. It means we looked and found nothing published. If a cell cannot be filled honestly it stays empty, and the figure at the top of this page goes down.

Note 1. Four instructions, three different quantities

Base to the top of the head, chest to the ground, and the base of the neck to the ground are three different lengths on the same bird, and the gaps between them are larger than the two-inch difference between the two published ranges. A fourth claim sits inside the first collection: a product titled “Daisy Porch Goose Outfit for 21 Inch Goose”, two inches below the range its own collection page states.

We have not merged these into an average, a “best guess” or a single tidy row. Each one is kept as its own row with its own address and its own date. A shopper reading either page in good faith cannot tell which number applies to them.

Note 2. Every published measurement is a height

Nineteen rows, and not one neck, girth or head circumference anywhere. Garments close around a body and hats go over a head; a height is a weak proxy for both. One seller, GooseOutfit, publishes a clear method for taking three of the four. It publishes no resulting number for any goose, including its own.

Note 3. “Large” is not a size

Five of the claims above are ranges: 22–24, 22–28, 23–27, 23–27 and 24–27 inches. Four distinct ranges, spanning 22 to 28 inches, every one of them called “large”. The other thirteen claims are a single number, and between them they use seven different heights: 7, 8, 13, 17, 19, 21 and 23 inches. Dress My Goose’s range starts at 24″, which means a stock 23″ goose — the commonest goose in the hobby — is undersize for that entire catalogue.

Note 4. Three of nineteen say where to put the tape

Fifteen rows publish a number and no instruction for producing it. One publishes neither. The three that do say where the tape goes give four instructions describing three different quantities, and three of those four come from one shop. Until sellers agree where the tape starts, two honest people can measure the same goose and disagree by several inches, and both be right.

Note 5. What is not here, and why that lowers the number at the top

  • The classic Union Products plastic lawn goose is missing. It is very probably the most common goose in the hobby, and 23″ is widely used as its height, but we have not opened a manufacturer page that publishes a dimension for it. So it has no row. Adding a row we cannot source would raise the coverage figure and lower its worth.
  • Seventeen different goose heights are in circulation across catalogues, tutorials and group posts, from 6″ to 29″. Six of them have a maker-published statue number on this page. The other eleven have none anywhere we could find.
  • No seller distinguishes plastic from concrete, though concrete geese are cast to different patterns by different regional yards and are the ones most likely to differ. There is no published plastic-versus-concrete fit difference for us to record.
  • No photographs. We have not photographed these geese. Photographs arrive when we own a tape measure and a camera and have stood in front of the object.
  • No member reports yet. When somebody tells us an outfit went on, that will be shown as its own line, kept separate from what a vendor states and from what we measured ourselves.

How we measure

Four measurements, always in the same order, always from the same places. We publish the method as well as the numbers so that anybody with a tape measure and a goose can check us in ten minutes. We would rather be corrected than believed.

  • A — Height. From the underside of the base to the highest point of the head, with the goose standing as it stands on your step. Not from the chest. Not from the neck. If your goose has no base, say so, and measure from the ground.
  • B — Neck circumference. All the way around the neck at its widest point — the widest place a collar or a garment opening has to pass over. This is the number that decides most of what fits.
  • C — Body girth. All the way around the fullest part of the body, including the wings if the outfit will cover them.
  • D — Head circumference. All the way around the crown, in front of the eyes and behind the bill. Nobody in the category publishes this, which is why no hat can be promised to fit.

Three kinds of knowledge, never mixed. A number we measured ourselves, a number a vendor states, and a number members report are three different things. They will always be shown on three separate lines, each labelled. Today every number on this page is the second kind.

GooseOutfit’s fit guide publishes a clear four-part method of its own, and A, B and C above ask for essentially the quantities it asks for. Anybody publishing a method is making this easier. What is still missing is the filled-in answer.

Leave anything blank that you do not know. Blank is fine. Guessing is not.
